Lithium battery recycling – an important component in the value chain

Recycling of lithium batteries as part of a European circular economy

As electromobility continues to advance, questions are being raised about the environmental footprint of vehicle batteries and critical raw materials and resources. In this context, the recycling of lithium ion batteries and the return of raw materials is seen as an important part of a European circular economy.

Studies already show that the volume of lithium ion battery recycling in Europe in 2030 could correspond to a volume of 230 kilotonnes per year – with a strong upward trend in the coming years. This means that the capacities for lithium battery recycling must be scaled up enormously in order to be able to cope with the future recycling volumes of used batteries.

Lithium battery recycling: strategic relevance

The strategic relevance of lithium ion battery recycling and lithium battery recycling lies on the one hand in providing key materials in high purity for the batteries such as cobalt, nickel and lithium compounds. This reduces Europe’s dependence for its own value chain of high-performance lithium-ion cells and batteries, which is currently being established. On the other hand, it makes it possible to realise a supply route that is characterised by good environmental performance and working conditions in accordance with European legal standards.

Lithium Ion Battery Recycling – How it works

For lithium ion battery recycling, various combinations of mechanical, pyro- and hydrometallurgical processes are used to recycle the battery materials.

Mechanical preparation

In this method of lithium ion battery recycling, the lithium ion batteries are first dismantled and mechanically processed. The mechanical processing enables the recovery of plastics, aluminium, copper and black mass. The black mass of the battery, which contains critical metals, is collected and then sent for hydrometallurgical processing. Other recovered materials are recycled in separate processes.

Hydrometallurgical processing

The hydrometallurgical recycling process involves a chemical precipitation method that enables rare minerals to be recovered from the black mass and supplied to battery manufacturers for reuse in the production of new batteries.

Lithium-ion battery recycling – no standardised process yet

Depending on the process, lithium, cobalt, manganese and nickel can be recovered from the battery and then reused for the production of new batteries. So far, no process has become established, so there is still a need in the industry for innovative, green and automatable technologies.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about lithium battery recycling

Are batteries recycled?

Yes, batteries can be fully recycled and reused. Therefore, it is important to dispose of batteries properly at appropriate collection points. The problem is not the recyclability of batteries, but that many consumers do not dispose of batteries properly, which means that the batteries do not end up in the designated collection points/facilities and are consequently not recycled.

Can lithium batteries be recycled?

Yes, lithium batteries can also be recycled, but the process is very time-consuming and therefore economically unprofitable. Therefore, part of the recycling costs of lithium-ion batteries is already included in the purchase price, the other part of the recycling costs is covered by the revenues of the recovered materials such as nickel and cobalt.

How are lithium batteries recycled?

Classically, lithium batteries are first disassembled into their components and then recycled separately. For example, lithium batteries are dismantled in a first step. The casing, cables, battery management systems etc. are removed by trained personnel and fed into conventional recycling plants.

Thermal and mechanical processes can be used for the actual recycling of the battery; pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes are also common. The cells are exposed to very high heat or boiling acids and alkalis, whereby certain ingredients can be recovered in each case.

Who recycles lithium-ion batteries?

Special disposal companies are responsible for recycling lithium ion batteries. In order for the batteries to be recycled by these companies, dealers and manufacturers of e-bikes and rechargeable batteries are obliged to take them back free of charge if they carry them in their product range. The dealers then send the batteries on to the disposal companies.

Can lithium from batteries be recycled?

Currently, copper, nickel and cobalt compounds are the target materials for recycling lithium ion batteries and accumulators. The recovery of lithium has been realised in only a few processes so far, or it is still in research and development, but will gain in importance in the next few years.
