FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about our Lithium Batteries
Complete Solution

How are batteries packed for safe transport?

For transport-safe packaging of batteries, it first depends on the type of batteries: Mixed batches are handled differently than lithium batteries. In addition, a distinction must be made between the weight and whether the batteries are defective or undamaged. For undamaged lithium batteries weighing >500 g, for example, they must be packed in such a way that short circuits and dangerous heat generation are prevented. This is given, for example, by protecting the terminals, using inner packaging to prevent contact between cells and batteries, using a non-electrically conductive and non-flammable cushioning material and protecting the batteries against excessive movement during transport. LogBATT’s total lithium battery solution covers all the important points as a matter of course.

How harmful are batteries to the environment?

Basically, batteries and accumulators are not harmful to the environment, but if they are disposed of improperly, some of the possible toxic ingredients such as mercury, cadmium and lead endanger the environment.

They thus pose a threat to the health of humans, animals and plants. Mercury, for example, is highly toxic to humans and can lead to impairment of the nervous, immune and reproductive systems. Cadmium compounds can cause kidney damage and are potentially carcinogenic, while lead can damage organs and the central nervous system. We are therefore particularly concerned that batteries, especially lithium ion batteries, are disposed of properly and professionally.

How long is the life of a lithium battery?

The service life of a battery is the period between the time of delivery (Begin of Life) and the time when the battery values fall below previously defined values due to the ageing process (End of Life). The End of Life does not mean that the battery no longer functions, but rather that the battery has such a high loss of performance that it can no longer be used as an energy storage device at this point. For example, the battery no longer holds energy as well as it did at the beginning of its life and needs to be charged more frequently.

The service life of a lithium battery cannot be predicted as a general rule, as many different factors influence the service life: The frequency of charge and discharge cycles leads to chemical changes within the cells and to thermal expansion and the formation of dendrites. In addition, the amount of time that has elapsed since manufacture must be taken into account because the battery is subject to an ageing process over time. The battery type, state of charge, ambient temperature, depth of discharge and time also play a role.

To prolong the life of the battery, it makes sense to never fully discharge the battery and never fully charge it. This way, the device is used at a low depth of discharge and the battery life is extended. A high depth of discharge means stress on the materials. To store a battery, it is advisable to first charge the battery to 50 % and store it in a cool place – this also extends the service life.
